Présentées dans un portefeuille original en maroquin rouge (26 x 33 cm.), doublure en moiré blanc au motif fleuri. A.B.E. (traces d’usage, légères déchirures à l’intérieur).
Batiste Barro – photographe français installé à Moscou en 1863, parti à Nijni Novgorod en 1865 où il s’oriente vers de grandes recherches ethnographiques. En 1867 B. Barro reçoit une médaille d’or pendant l’exposition ethnographique de Moscou pour ses photographies de personnages en costumes traditionnels de Mordova, Tchermes et la région de Novgorod. En 1867, il commence à vendre à Moscou des albums photographiques représentant des types ethnographiques des provinces éloignées qui deviennent rapidement assez recherchés.
A la fin de l’été 1866, le futur tsar Alexandre III effectua avec son frère son premier voyage éducatif et préparatif à travers le pays. Au cours de ce voyage, il visitera Tver, Ribinsk, Yaroslavl, Kastroma, Nijni Novgorod, Kazan et Moscou. Les voyages de ce genre étaient obligatoires pour chaque futur tsar a¯n de mieux connaître le pays et de s’approcher du peuple. Notre recueil de photographies a certainement été présenté au futur tsar dans ce contexte éducatif par la ville de Nijni Novgorod. Les photographies ethnographiques de B. Barro sont très rares et présentent un important intérêt scientifique.

Each photograph is annotated in French and numbered. According to this numbering, we have 29 photographs out of 42. Presented in an original red morocco wallet (26 x 33 cm.), lining in white moiré with a floral pattern. A.B.E. (traces of use, slight tears inside).
Batiste Barro – French photographer installed in Moscow in 1863, left for Nijni Novgorod in 1865 where he turned to major ethnographic research. In 1867 B. Barro received a gold medal during the ethnographic exhibition in Moscow for his photographs of people in traditional costumes from Mordova, Chermes and the Novgorod region. In 1867, he began selling photographic albums in Moscow depicting ethnographic types from remote provinces, which quickly became quite sought-after.
At the end of the summer of 1866, the future Tsar Alexander III made his first educational and preparatory trip across the country with his brother. During this trip he will visit Tver, Ribinsk, Yaroslavl, Kastroma, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan and Moscow. Trips of this kind were obligatory for each future tsar in order to get to know the country better and get closer to the people. Our collection of photographs was certainly presented to the future tsar in this educational context by the city of Nizhny Novgorod. B. Barro's ethnographic photographs are very rare and present an important scientific interest.
