Alois Löcherer/ Portraits of Munich artists 1848/1849
A remarkable set of 18 calotypes by Alois Löcherer (1815-1862) taken in his workshop in Munich before 1850.
Mainly known for the Album der Zeitgenossen (1853), edited with Hans Hanfstaengl, Löcherer photographed portraits of artists of the Munich circle, painters, lithographers, sculptors, former students of the Royal Academy of Fine-Arts in Munich, renowned school founded in 1808 by Maximilian I of Bavaria, from the opening of his photography studio in 1848. They are landscape painters, portraitists, miniaturists, animal painters, work for the Bavarian court, travel to Italy and Northern Europe. They welcome painters who, like them, travel through Europe, such as the Danish painter Kiellerup, or the Swiss Gonzenbach who worked in the studio of Wilhelm Kaltenbach.
The studio of the Munich photographer is very popular. His portraits of artists are extremely modern and remarkable in quality.
Photographed on salt paper, each print is glued to a grey cardboard by its four corners, with edgings in pencil forming a frame. On the back, the name of the artist is written in pencil, in two sets of writings, one of the period in German, the other more recent. Sizes vary between 24 x 19.6 cm and 14.5 x 12.6 cm, for Bergmann’s portrait - the mounting board is 35 x 29 cm.
Ignaz Bergmann (1797-1865), painter and lithographer - Joseph Bernhardt (1805-1885) enrolled at the Munich Academy in 1820. Portrait painter, in Paris, he was a student of Paul Delaroche. He opened a painting school in Munich, was a renown painter in Prussia and Bavaria. – A contemporary of Schleich, Friedrich Drück (1809-1884), soon became a recognized painter in Munich. His uncle Joseph Stieler was an official court painter. Young Friedrich worked in his studio and followed the teachings at the Academy of Fine Arts. He was the court portraitist, painting various personalities, notably King Louis I in 1858. - Johann Jakob Eberhardt (1820-1889) an art historian, genre painter. - Gisbert Flüggen (1811-1859), a genre painter and well-known artist during his lifetime, joined the Munich Academy in 1833. In 1852 he became an honorary member, but died prematurely. - Bernhardt Fries (1820-1879) was the son of collector Christian Adam Fries. He started at the Munich Academy in the workshop of Cornelius in 1835. As a landscape painter, he often worked in Italy. - Friedrich Gärtner (1824-1905) son of the architect Friedrich von Gärtner, was an architectural painter. - Bonaventura Genelli (1798-1868) of Italian origins, born in Berlin into a family of artists, the young Bonaventura lived in Italy until 1832. In Munich, he lived very modestly. He joined the court of Weimar late, where he proved himself to be a great draftsman, praised by Cornelius and Kaulbach. - Carl Arnold Gonzenbach (1806-1885) was a Swiss painter who worked in Munich in the workshop of Wilhelm von Kaulbach from 1838 to 1848. - François Napoléon Heigel (1813-1888), son of portraitist Joseph Heigel, worked at the Bavarian court as a miniaturist portraitist and genre painter. He painted the portraits of all the crowned heads of the kingdom, and taught drawing to the royal princesses. — Ernst Kaiser (1803-1865), a landscape painter, studied at the Munich Academy in 1822. He first trained as a history painter, but landscapes quickly attracted him, especially in Upper Bavaria. Much encouraged by King Louis I, he travelled to Italy, and on his return joined a community of landscape painters in Munich. - Theodor Julius Kiellerup (1818-1850) born in Copenhagen, he was in Munich from 1841 and was an animal painter. He died prematurely at the age of 32.
August Klotz (1808-1853) a history painter, curator at the Kunstverein in Munich. – A contemporary of Klotz, Heinrich Kohler (1808-1885) was a painter and lithographer. - Carl Adolf Mende (1807-1857) a war and genre painter, participated in the Künstlerkolonie Frauenchiemsee. He died prematurely in 1857. - Edmond de Schlampheleer (1824-1899) was a Belgian landscape painter, in a style similar to the French school of Barbizon; he travelled through Bavaria.
Eduard Schleich (1812-1874), a very young student at the Academy and later, a teacher.
As a landscape painter, he was influenced by Flemish and Dutch masters. He was of great influence among German landscapers.
Romantic painter Friedrich Wilhelm Schön (1810-1868) studied at the Academy in the studio of Peter von Cornelius. A contemporary of Schleich, he was very involved in the Munich community of artists. - The sculptor Peter Schöpf (1805-1875) entered the Academy in 1818 and took his first lessons in wood sculpture in the workshop of his father, the sculptor Peter Paul Schöpf. With a grant from King Louis I of Bavaria, he went to work in Rome. - Raphael Winter (1784-1853), was the son of the painter Joseph Georg Winter, an animal painter.
When his father died, the young Raphael entered the Lithographic Institute in Munich, where he persued a career and commited himself to drawing, animals and landscapes being his favourite subjects. He posed for Alois Löcherer shortly before his death.

Essentiellement connu pour l’Album der Zeitgenossen, (1853) édité avec Hans Hanfstaengl, Löcherer a fait le portrait des artistes du cercle munichois, peintres, lithographes, sculpteurs, anciens élèves de l’Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Munich, école de renom fondée en 1808 par Maximilien Ier de Bavière, dès l’ouverture de son atelier de photographie en 1848.
Ils sont peintres paysagistes, portraitistes, miniaturistes, peintres animaliers, travaillent pour la Cour de Bavière, voyagent en Italie et en Europe du Nord. Ils accueillent des peintres qui comme eux, voyagent en Europe, comme le peintre danois Kiellerup, ou le suisse Gonzenbach qui va travailler à l’atelier de Wilhelm Kaltenbach.
Le studio du photographe munichois est très apprécié. Ses portraits d’artistes sont extrêmement modernes et remarquables de qualité de rendu.
Tirée sur papier salé, chaque épreuve est collée aux quatre coins sur un carton gris, des lisérés au crayon forment un cadre. Au dos, le nom de l’artiste est indiqué au crayon, dans deux écritures, l’une d’époque, en allemand, l’autre plus récente. Les formats varient entre 24 x 19,6 cm et 14,5 x 12,6 cm pour le portrait de Bergmann - le montage carton est 35 x 29 cm.

Il sera le portraitiste des personnalités de la Cour, notamment du roi Louis Ier, en 1858.- Johann Jakob Eberhardt (1820-1889) Historien d’art, peintre de genre. - Gisbert Flüggen (1811-1859) peintre de genre, artiste très renommé de son vivant, a intégré l’académie de Munich en 1833; en 1852, il en est membre honoraire. Il meurt prématurément. - Bernhardt Fries (1820-1879) est le fils du collectionneur Christian Adam Fries. Il entre à l’académie de Munich, dans l’atelier de Cornélius en 1835. Peintre de paysage, il travaille souvent en Italie. - Friedrich Gärtner (1824-1905) fils de l’architecte Friedrich von Gärtner, est un peintre d’architecture. - Bonaventura Genelli (1798-1868) D’origine italienne, né à Berlin dans une famille d’artistes, le jeune Bonaventura vit en Italie jusqu’en 1832. A Munich, il vivra très modestement. il intègre tardivement la cour de Weimar, Il sera un grand dessinateur, salué par Cornélius et Kaulbach. - Carl Arnold Gonzenbach (1806-1885) est un peintre suisse qui travaillera à Munich dans l’atelier de Wilhelm von Kaulbach de 1838 à 1848. - François Napoléon Heigel (1813-1888), fils du portraitiste Joseph Heigel, travaille à la cour de Bavière comme portraitiste miniaturiste et peintre de genre. Il fera le portrait de toutes les têtes couronnées du royaume, et enseignera le dessin aux princesses royales. —Ernst Kaiser ( 1803-1865) peintre paysagiste, élève à l’académie de Munich dès 1822. Il reçoit d’abord une formation de peintre d’histoire, mais le paysage va très vite l’attirer, plus particulièrement la Haute Bavière. Très encouragé par le roi Louis Ier, il va voyager en Italie, et à son retour rejoindre une communauté de peintres paysagistes de Munich. - Théodor Julius Kiellerup (1818-1850) né à Copenhague, à Munich à partir de 1841, est un peintre animalier. Il meurt prématurément à l’âge de 32 ans.

Eduard Schleich (1812-1874), très jeune élève à l’Académie et plus tard enseignant.
Peintre de paysages, influencé par les Flamands et les maitres hollandais. Il aura une grande influence parmi les paysagistes allemands.
Peintre romantique, Friedrich Wilhelm Schön (1810-1868) étudie à l’Académie dans l’atelier de Peter von Cornélius. Contemporain de Schleich, il sera très impliqué dans la communauté des artistes de Munich. - Le sculpteur Peter Schöpf (1805-1875) entre à l’Académie en 1818 et prend ses premières leçons de sculpture sur bois dans l’atelier de son père, le sculpteur Peter Paul Schöpf. Boursier du roi Louis Ier de Bavière, il partira travailler à Rome. - Raphael Winter (1784-1853), est le fils du peintre Joseph Georg Winter, peintre animalier.
A la mort de son père, le jeune Raphael entre à l’Institut lithographique de Munich, il va y faire carrière et se cantonne au dessin, animaux et paysages sont ses sujets de prédilection.
Il pose pour Alois Löcherer peu de temps avant sa mort.
